pothole or pavement cracks
description:
Milvia, the bike boulevard through downtown Berkeley, is falling apart, especially on the northbound side of the street between Channing and Center. At the boundary between the bike lane and car traffic a seam is opening up, a seam wide enough to swallow a bicycle tire. At various intersections, like Bancroft and Kittridge, the pavement around manhole covers and grates is breaking out, leading to sizable holes in the pavement, perhaps the size of a human head. Hitting one of these or getting a wheel caught in a seam could easily cause a crash.

Seconded. The whole area from Blake St north to University Ave on Milvia St is in need of some serious work, and in addition the bike lanes from Dwight to Channing are of substandard width, putting all cyclists who use them in serious risk of getting doored.
This whole area should really just use sharrows, and there should be substantial traffic calming measures to encourage through drivers to use MLK one block to the west or Shattuck one block to the east. I know the Berkeley bike/ped committee had some discussions about this area recently but did not hear if there were any ideas or resolutions that came out of it. Does anybody here know of any plans or studies that are currently in progress regarding this area?
