LAB Road One / Street Skills Class

You already know how to ride a bike . . . Now learn to drive one!

Back by popular demand, EBBC's Street Skills for Cyclists course is based on the League of American Bicyclists Road One class. This FREE class, to be held in Oakland in March and April 2004, will concentrate on the thorny issues of a bicyclist sharing the road with motorists. Riding a bike in traffic ain't easy. Negotiating left turns, avoiding buses, getting through intersections, and sharing the road with hurried motorists can be a real challenge. Street Skills for Cyclists will provide proven strategies that will help both novice and experienced cyclists stay safer and feel more confident cruising them mean streets.

Choose from one of three lecture dates, followed by an optional on-road session. Lectures will be held at Oakland's Rockridge Branch Library, 5366 College Ave. (at Manila, 5-blocks from BART). A bicycle is not required at the lecture.

Lectures, with snacks provided, are offered on (choose one):
Sat Mar 6, 10am-2pm;   Wed Mar 10, 6-10pm;   Thu Apr 1, 6-10pm.

The on-road session will be Sat Apr 3, 9am-4pm. Expect to ride about six miles in downtown Oakland. Course maps and directions from a convenient BART station will be provided. A light lunch will be provided.

A helmet and operable bike are required at the Saturday on-bike session. Pre-registration required. Call (510) 433-RIDE (7433); select option 2. Leave your phone number and the lecture date that you want to attend. We will get back to you by phone to confirm and then mail the textbook. Classroom capacity is limited. Your registration reserves your seat and a copy of the text. All registrants will sign a liability waiver. Funding for this project is made possible through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.

Bike Month, May 2004

May is National Bike Month. BFBC and other local groups are organizing a variety of events in Berkeley to increase awareness of bicycling and to celebrate its joys and benefits. Note: Rain may cancel any outdoor event. If weather is doubtful, please call the event leader.

If you can help with these or other events, please contact contact Cynthia Powell, our Volunteer Coordinator, at vc (at) bfbc2 (dot) org or call BFBC at 510-549-7433. We especially need people to help with Bike-to-Work day.

Sat May 1, 7-9pm.  Presentation - Medieval Urbanism in Morocco: Lessons for the Modern World, by Randy Ghent of Car Busters and Towards Car-Free Cities. At the Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave. This presentation will focus on the unique urban design of Morocco's medinas (medieval pedestrian cities), with a focus on the history of urban form and ways in which a dense, compact, urban habitat can be built without dependence on motorized or mechanized transport, while at the same time promoting a rich and vibrant public life. Randy Ghent co-founded Car Busters (now World Carfree Network) in 1997 in Lyon, France, while working as a coordinator of the Towards Car-Free Cities conference. Since 1997, he has been based in Lyon, Melbourne, and Prague as a full-time staff member of the Car Busters/World Carfree Network staff. Co-sponsoring groups are Ecocity Builders, BEST, Ecology Center, and BFBC. A PDF-format flyer with detailed information is available.

From 7:30-10:00am, over 800 cyclists will ride through Berkeley on Grizzly Peak Blvd from the south to north city limits as part of this all-day 107-mile tour of the East Bay hills. On no other day in the year can you see so many happy riders in such thick succession in the city. Riders will peer into hidden gardens filled with fanciful sculpture, see a creek daylighted in a schoolyard, observe unique domestic architecture, find shaded paths, and observe murals painted by young children. The ride will be an exploration of the vernacular side of Berkeley most people never notice, including historic streetcar and creek lines. Ride leaders John Steere and Judith Reich will guide this 10-12 mile ride, which will be easy and without hills. The ride will begin at Halcyon Commons, a small neighborhood-built park on Halcyon Court, next to Prince Street, one block west of Telegraph. A bioregional map of Berkeley depicting scores of these "gems" along with the City's creeks and historic transit system will be available for sale. City Council Election Forum, Sat Oct 9, 2-4pm

Sat Oct 9, 2004, 2-4pm: Berkeley City Council Election Forum on Environmental Transportation and Land Use

Location: Berkeley Community Media, 2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Studio A. (Just south of Allston Way, about three blocks from Downtown BART.)

Nine of the ten candidates for Berkeley City Council have confirmed participation in this two-hour, televised forum on environmental approaches to transportation and land use in Berkeley and the region.

Questions are being presented by a variety of co-sponsoring groups including the Transportation and Land Use Coalition (TALC), Urban Ecology, Ecocity Builders, the Bicycle-Friendly Berkeley Coalition (BFBC), the Berkeley Ecological and Safe Transportation Coalition (BEST), Walk and Roll Berkeley, and the Post Carbon Institute.

Issues to be covered include: Smart Growth and Density; Bus Rapid Transit on Telegraph Avenue; Vista College transportation mitigation funds; daylighting of creeks and transfer of development rights; bicycle and pedestrian safety and facilities; Peak Oil and an energy constrained future; creation of carfree spaces and housing; and more.

Will Berkeley have a new parking garage downtown? Will all new housing require auto parking? What can be done to improve conditions for walking, bicycling and using wheelchairs? Will our community college, Vista, be forced to pay for a parking garage instead of alternative transportation, when the majority of its students don't drive and those that do, usually don't use parking garages? Will Bus Rapid Transit be a reality, or will private autos continue to slow down bus efficiency? Is there a chance to provide free shuttles within Berkeley? What about a city-wide AC Transit pass? Should the City be more dense, and if so, where and how? Will we continue to increase the jobs/housing imbalance, ever-increasing the amount of driving in Berkeley? Can there be more carfree areas in the city? Will we restore creeks whose culverts are collapsing, possibly through Transfer of Development rights? What about the major growth planned by the University, including thousands of parking spaces? And last but not least, what can the City do to prepare for the decline of oil availability?

Come find out where the candidates stand on these important issues this Saturday! Bring your questions and your critical thinking skills.

Arrive early; seating is limited.

The forum is expected to be broadcast live. It will be rebroadcast repeatedly on BTV, Channel 33, until the election Nov. 2, 2004:

(This list last updated 2004-10-14.)

BTV station info: 510.848.2288, www.betv.org.

Informative short films illustrating the issues are being planned.
