BFBC Position on Proposed Center Street Changes
The following resolution was adopted by the BFBC Board of Directors at its meeting 28 March 2004. It is consistent with the recommendations adopted by the Berkeley Transportation Commission at its meeting on 23 March 2004.
In consideration of the following:
- Center St. has considerable bicycle traffic;
- Center St. is a major bicycle access route linking BART, major Berkley streets, and the UC campus (including a turnout through the median on Oxford St. leading into campus from the southbound lane between Center and Allston); and
- Center St. is designated a Class 2 bike route in the Berkeley Bicycle Plan
The Bicycle-Friendly Berkeley Coalition hereby recommends that:
- Under any plan adopted for Center St, there should be adequate bicycle access that meets or preferably exceeds applicable minimum standards and is no less than current access.
- If Center St is converted to a pedestrian street as has been proposed, the conversion should include a separated bikeway which meets the above-mentioned standards.
